“in 1949, don haynes, a 39-year-old truck driver, made a bet that he would spend the next 14 months traveling to each of the 48 states while welded inside his car. the car came equipped with a chemical toilet and phone (and, someone suggested, removable floorboards so he could occasionally sneak out).”
haynes visited 41 states and covered 111,000 of the planned 140,000 miles when his car broke down in winnemucca, nevada, just three weeks short of completing his trip.
“later, he would embark on a quest to collect pajamas from the governor of each state, though he stopped after collecting 41 states’ worth. haynes would return to the car throughout the 50’s and 60s’- in the late 50’s he and wife shut themselves in and traveled the country billing themselves as “the nomads”- but what became of the ‘seaman of the sealed car’ after that is a mystery.”
“buster had an unfortunate encounter in a photo booth on the wildlife-populated island of catalina.”
in canada, bears may attack your child. naturally, your first reaction would be to photograph the situation. [photo, circa 1902, from the library and archives canada, and it’s actually a trained bear wrestling a “man.” i still say this is a child.]
i sometimes think that never blows so red
the rose as where some buried caesar bled;
that every hyacinth the garden wears
dropt in its lap from some once lovely head.

it’s gratuitous johnny cash time. he’s the man in black, down to his socks…
except for the white loafers. so badass.
“the problem with people who have no vices is that, generally, you can be pretty sure they’re going to have some pretty annoying virtues.” – elizabeth taylor
warren beatty & faye dunaway in bonnie and clyde (1967), which was directed by arthur penn but was ultimately beatty’s creation. also… coca-cola product placement, anyone?
how the hell did i not know that warren beatty and shirley maclaine are brother and sister?!? no wonder they’re both so hilarious and smart and fabulous. they also both have such long and (mostly) respectable hollywood careers, which is a rare thing.
shirley, joan collins (girlfriend of the moment), and warren, 1959.
