quote of the day: merlyn
2 February, 2012, 12:44 am
Filed under: art, books, history, magic, movies, quote of the day

“the best thing for being sad,” replied merlyn, beginning to puff and blow, “is to learn something. that is the only thing that never fails. you may grow old and trembling in your anatomies, you may lie awake at night listening to the disorder of your veins, you may miss your only love, you may see the world about you devastated by evil lunatics, or know your honour trampled in the sewers of baser minds. there is only one thing for it then – to learn. learn why the world wags and what wags it. that is the only thing which the mind can never exhaust, never alienate, never be tortured by, never fear or distrust, and never dream of regretting. learning is the thing for you.”

– t.h. white’s merlyn in the once and future king.

immediately after this, arthur replies: “i have learned, and been happy.”
above: concept art from the disney version of the sword in the stone, the first section of white’s novel.

martin parr has collected and is now exhibiting these “painted photographs.” they once were press photos that got marked up by editors/publications to specify reproduction instructions or cropping, but they look fantastic as they are.

‘the artist’ won three golden globes! as it should have. this man’s eyebrows alone deserve their own award. so does the dog.

i used to think this movie was a work of genius. now i know so.
